Response to Queen’s Speech 2017

Cllr Paul Watson, Chair of Key Cities Group and Leader of Sunderland City Council, said:

“The Prime Minister has promised to show humility as she attempts to advance her government’s legislative programme, and this is welcome. I believe that without an effective majority in the House of Commons, Theresa May has to adopt a more inclusive approach to the Brexit negotiations that will dominate the months ahead.

“We in local government stand ready to work with ministers to ensure that the interests of the people – their jobs, businesses and livelihoods – are prioritised in the Brexit process. I am also encouraged by the Chancellor’s renewed emphasis in the Mansion House speech that a transitional period will be needed in order to ensure that Brexit  can be implemented smoothly and without unnecessary and painful disruption.”
