Wakefield is home to 327,000 people. Located at the junction of the M1 and M62 and on the East Coast main line it is a key centre within the country for logistics and distribution with firms such as Norbert Dentressangle and Next and major logistics and distribution centres for ASDA and Morrisons.

Wakefield has built its economy in recent years on urban regeneration and securing inward investment, as well as diversifying our economic base. Manufacturing continues to grow in and now encompasses 11.5% of all local employment. We are home to a number of global companies including Coca Cola, Haribo and Warburtons. Local manufacturers continue to invest and increase their workforces.

Since 2000, we have delivered a period of sustained economic growth, attracting over £700m of inward investment to transform our city centre. Wakefield is also a key area for housing development within the region with planning permission granted for more than 2600 new homes in 2012 alone – and we have ambitious plans for at least another 10,000 more houses by 2022.

Wakefield has a fast developing and vibrant cultural sector. Venues such as the award winning Hepworth Gallery - the largest recent purpose built gallery outside of London and the Yorkshire sculpture Park are attracting over a million visitors an year and bringing over £5m a year into our economy.
